ABPN Requirements for Psychiatrists

The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) requires:

  • Complete 90 CME credits per 3-year block (average of 30 CME credits per year)
  • Complete 16 Self-Assessment (SA) CME credits per 3-year block
  • Complete one Patient Safety activity (one-time requirement)
  • Complete one PIP activity (Clinical or Feedback Module) per 3-year block
  • Choose either CC/recertification examination every 10 years OR ABCC Pathway (article-based) every three years
  • Maintain unrestricted medical license(s)

These requirements must be met during each 3-year block of the continuous certification program. CME activities do not need to be ABPN-approved, but Self-Assessment activities must be selected from the ABPN Approved Products List.
